A PROMISE FROM OUR FOUNDER
With your help, The War Horse will be the most revolutionary news gathering tool and hub for war related materials, investigations, profiles, and documentation of any and all conflicts in the history of the United States and the world. Because nothing like this has every existed, the masses could not join the larger conversation about war.
The War Horse will not compete with other news outlets. We will inspire, collaborate, and compliment existing media thus benefiting journalism as a whole.
By providing an open-source database and repository for all things related to Operation Enduring Freedom, New Dawn, and Iraqi Freedom, each and every member can participate in a conversation that will span the remainder of the digital age. Currently, people cannot post their experiences, memories, feelings, and regrets in one central location.
The War Horse will change that by seamlessly threading journalism, history, big data, investigations, an online community, and existing accounts into a single open-source network. This allows for the most vast non-partisan analysis of foreign policy and war, to date.
The consumers of The War Horse are from all walks of life and because of the high standard of journalistic integrity we foster, our verification processes, and our “no surprises mentality,” we are poised to provide an outlet and middle ground for individuals and groups with varying opinions on war. In an age where people grow more and more skeptical of news coverage, we offer refuge and hope – a place where truth and the individual human experience matter. Because we host copious amounts of data about service members killed in action, we run the risk of being misinterpreted as pro-troop and/or pro-war. Our work ethic and published work will counter this argument. While we will not prove this to everyone, the overwhelming majority of consumers will embrace and respect our work. We will combat any negativity by improving our journalistic prowess, strength in all storytelling mediums, and continuously striving to be an innovator in digital media.
The War Horse is a continuation of war coverage started by Ernie Pyle, arguably the greatest war writer of all time. Our name comes from a phrase he coined about covering war - “War Horsing”. We are carrying on Ernie’s vision by publishing well-rounded works of journalism, data collection, analysis, and historical accounts. We cannot demand accurate information from our members, subjects, and sources if we do not set the standard of accuracy, reporting practice, and presentation ourselves.
Accountability in journalism begins with holding your sources accountable alongside yourself. The War Horse will set this standard. In the event we are wrong in our reporting, all grievances and/or disputes over published materials will be taken with the utmost seriousness. The War Horse will own our mistakes and not only learn from them, but also foster an environment where we will be the authority on Post-9/11 conflict by maintaining an open and honest conversation with the community we will forge.
Because we will be a news outlet that embraces all well-founded and proven opinions and viewpoints, The War Horse will have an active community that will help us generate our supporting documentation, data, source list, and more. Since all content will be moderated, any suggestion of illegal activity, such as war crimes, will not be published without adequate documentation being supplied in conjunction. To date, no other news outlet has embraced the degree of media innovation, social media, and digital storytelling that will be the staple of The War Horse. The style, manner, and professionalism with which The War Horse will present our product to the masses will revolutionize the media industry and the documentation of the human experience.
We will conduct all business at the War Horse following a guiding principle of modern New York Times - Adolph S. Ochs. Just like Mr. Och, it will be my earnest aim that The War Horse give the news, all the news, in concise and attractive form, in language that is parliamentary in good society, and give it as early, if not earlier, that it can be learned through any other reliable medium; to give the news impartially, without fear or favor, regardless of party, sect or interest involved; to make the columns at The War Horse a forum for the consideration of all questions of public importance, and to that end to invite intelligent discussion from all shades of opinion.
The War Horse will live by Mr. Och’s poignant and necessary words, much like Joseph Pulitzer believed that “Our Republic and its press will rise or fall together," Pulitzer wrote. "An able, disinterested, public-spirited press, with trained intelligence to know the right and courage to do it, can preserve that public virtue without which popular government is a sham and a mockery. A cynical, mercenary, demagogic press will produce in time a people as base as itself. The power to mold the future of the Republic will be in the hands of the journalists of future generations.”
The War Horse will report without fear or favor and ensure our Republic rises together.
Semper Fidelis and Thank You,
